The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a recall alert on January 11, 2021, after pet food manufacturer Midwestern Pet Food expanded a recall on multiple brands of dog and cat food.
This recall was an expansion of a recall which first came to light on December 30, 2020. The original recall was a result of the FDA being alerted to reports of at least 28 dogs that had died and eight that were ill after consuming the recalled pet food.
As of January 21, more than 110 dogs had died and more than 210 had fallen ill after eating certain pet food manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods.
What was recalled?
This recall, not the original recall, covers the products listed below which were manufactured at Midwestern Pet Foods’ facility in Oklahoma and have an expiry date of July 9, 2022 or earlier. The unique Oklahoma facility identifier is “05” and can be found in the date/lot code.

Why was it recalled?
Aflatoxins are toxins which can grow on corn and other grain used as ingredients in pet food. They are toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, and if consumed in high volumes, can cause illness and death in pets.
Symptoms include vomiting, jaundice, diarrhea, sluggishness, and decreased appetite. In severe cases, this toxicity can be fatal. In some cases, pets may suffer liver damage but not show any symptoms.
It is unlikely that pet owners who handle products containing aflatoxin are at risk of aflatoxin poisoning. But, pet owners should always wash their hands after handling pet food.

The impacted products were distributed to online retailers and stores nationwide in the United States.
