Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is turkey thigh. Turkey is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of turkey”. 1

Turkey is naturally rich in the 11 essential amino acids required by a cat to sustain life.

The second ingredient is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are a gluten-free source of complex carbohydrates in cat food. They are naturally rich in dietary fiber and beta carotene.

The third ingredient is spinach. Due to its exceptional vitamin and mineral content, spinach exhibits a remarkably high nutrient Completeness Score 2 of 91. For cats who are predisposed to oxalate stones spinach should be avoided, due to its high oxalate content.

The fourth ingredient is tricalcium phosphate, a beneficial source of calcium and phosphorus. In addition, this additive is used in wet foods as an emulsifier — an agent designed to disperse a food’s fats more evenly in water.

The fifth ingredient is cranberries, a nutrient-rich fruit that’s also high in fiber.

The sixth ingredient is iodized salt which is a common salt (sodium chloride) containing no less than 0.007% iodine, which is uniformly distributed. Iodized salt is included within pet foods as a source of iodine, an essential nutrient in the diet.

The seventh ingredient is fish oil. Fish oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high quality fats boast the highest bio-availability to dogs and humans.

Depending on its level of freshness and purity, fish oil should be considered a commendable addition.

The eighth ingredient is dried kelp which is a dehydrated form of seaweed also known as alginate. Kelp may be used here as a thickening or gelling agent, but increasingly kelp, specifically the Ascophyllum nodosum variety, is included for its other benefits. Kelp is often included because studies have shown plaque reduction and dental health benefits, as well as supporting blood sugar control and other applications.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, My Perfect Pet Toby’s Turkey Carnivore Grain Free Blend looks like an above-average fresh product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 55.9%, a fat level of 15.6% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 20.5%.

As a group, the brand features an above-average protein content of 50.2% and a mean fat level of 15.2%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 26.6% for the overall product line, alongside a fat to protein ratio of 31%.

This means that My Perfect Pet grain-free fresh range contains higher than average protein, near-average carbohydrate and near- average fat, when compared to typical fresh cat food.

Final Word

This range of fresh food provides high protein content derived from good quality animal muscle meat. It is human grade and contains both cooked meats and fresh raw vegetables, offering a complete and balanced food option for your cat.
