Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is chicken with ground bone.  Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”. 1

Chicken is naturally rich in the 11 essential amino acids required by a cat to sustain life.  The ground bone is an excellent source of natural calcium.

The second ingredient is salmon.  Salmon is an oily marine and freshwater fish not only high in protein but also omega 3 fatty acids, essential oils needed by every cat to sustain life.

The third ingredient is whitefish, a marine or freshwater species native to Canada and the California coast.

The fourth ingredient is pumpkin.  Pumpkin is a nutritious addition high in complex carbohydrates, beta-carotene and dietary fiber.

The fifth ingredient is coconut flour, a powder derived from dried, defatted coconut meat.  This cereal grain replacement is high in fiber and low in digestible carbohydrates.  In addition, coconut flour also contains about 18% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this cat food.

The sixth ingredient is fenugreek seed.  Fenugreek seed is high in fiber and a source of nutrients.  Fenugreek seed is reported to have many benefits to health and has been used as a herbal solution in parts of the world traditionally.

Reported benefits included controlling blood sugar, balancing cholesterol, soothing properties and effects on digestive and reproductive systems.

It must be noted that there have been no studies so far which have found inclusion of fenugreek seeds in the diets of cats to provide health benefits.

The seventh ingredient is magnesium proteinate, a chelated mineral, which means that magnesium has been chemically attached to protein. This makes it easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better cat foods.

The eighth ingredient is calcium carbonate, likely used here as a dietary mineral supplement.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This food also contains chelated minerals that have been chemically attached to protein.  This makes them easier to absorb.  Chelated minerals are usually found in better cat foods.
