The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a recall alert on June 18, 2022 after Freshpet Inc. voluntarily recalled its Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe.
The recall was a cautionary measure and related to potential salmonella contamination.There were no reports of any illness or adverse reactions.
What was recalled?
A single lot of Freshpet Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe, 4.5 lb. bag, best by Oct. 29, 2022
Why was it recalled?
Salmonella bacteria can cause an infection when consumed, which causes symptoms in cats such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, excess salivation, and decreased appetite.
It can also cause similar symptoms in humans if they handle contaminated products so be sure to wash your hands after handling your cat’s food. Some cats may not show symptoms but can still spread the bacteria to other household pets and humans.
Where was the product sold?
A single lot was designated for destruction, but a small portion of the lot was inadvertently shipped to retailers in limited geographic markets. The lot may have been sold at limited Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia; and limited Target stores and other select retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia. No other Freshpet products or lot codes are impacted by this recall.
