Updated, February 18, 2025 – Northwest Naturals Pet Food has terminated its recall of one batch of its 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food.

In a statement, the company revealed that following an inspection of its manufacturing facility by the FDA and Oregon Department of Agriculture, from late December 2024 through February 7, 2025, the source of the alleged bird flu contamination could not be found.

The company said: “The FDA’s audit did not contain any findings related to H5N1 or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), and the FDA did not identify the source of the alleged contamination found in the opened bag of our product. Additionally, our product was never included in the FDA’s list of Recalls & Withdrawals. Upon the completion of FDA’s audit, we updated the status of our voluntary recall with ODA to ‘closed’ and the recall has since been terminated.

What to do?

Consumers who purchased this product are advised to immediately discard it. For a full refund, contact the place of purchase.

Consumption of raw or undercooked pet food contaminated with HPAI may cause illness in animals. One cat is reported to have died from eating the contaminated food.

The FDA has issued guidelines to reduce the risk of pets contracting H5N1 (avian influenza), particularly in cats, which are highly susceptible to the virus. Investigations have linked HPAI infections in felines to contaminated or improperly processed foods, such as raw or undercooked meats and unpasteurized milk. Cats should not consume products from affected farms unless thoroughly cooked or pasteurized, and they should be kept from hunting wild birds.
